New CEO at tribe

matt marshall reported on his silicon valley blog today that tribe has hired a new ceo and while i dont agree with his headline ("Silicon Valley shakeups continue: Tribe replaces Pincus"), he does accurately describe my reasoning for hiring a ceo.

"It is similar to what happened at his previous company Support.com, where he left the CEO spot and went on to lead some key strategic deals for the company...Tribe is attempting to accelerate its growth. Pincus said it is clear that Tribe should continue its focus on "community listings," and that growth in the number of unique users and listings has been solid over the past year -- particularly in the Bay Area. It's just that Tribe needs to be taken to the next level, he said. "It has good signs, but we haven’t scaled it yet."...Regarding his stepping down, Pincus said: "I don't really enjoy being a day to day manager of people and projects," he said, "and it's not something I think I'm particularly good at..."

tribe will put out a formal release naming the new ceo and his background tomorrow. i'm excited to get back to focusing on new ideas for tribe and beyond...and maybe do a little more flying and biking again.

with the new profile release tribe will have a module that will aggregate what someone is saying across all tribes. of course this will be at your option to have it or not. what does everyone think of that?

tribe product roadmap

here's where you should see us going in next few quarters. basically, we want to enable tribe users to do more outside of tribe. we want to open our functionality so it's useful in your web world.

step 1 - open profiles - we believe that in the future there will be many web services that leverage your identity (public and pvt) and you will want to host it in one place (tribe or other). therefore, we're giving you a unique url and ways to customize and 'own' your profile.

additionally, we think that you already have your info spread all over the web from dating and job sites to evite and yahoo. why add yet another place to check and invest? we think you should have one repository for inbound and outbound info relating to you. therefore, your tribe open profile will over time let you import many types of data from your blog or amzn wishlist to your evite calendar and more. if you have top picks of outside data you'd like let us know.

what's really exciting (to us at least) is that over time we'll let any third party build modules for our users to add to their profiles. this also means we dont have to bother with further development on areas like photo management or blogging.

step 2 - open tribes - why not do the same thing for groups? we'll let you customize the look and feel and application modules. maybe you want to add group recommendations. maybe you think that's stupid for your purpose. maybe you want your tribe integrated with your web site. in general, your tribe should become your wikipedia, a group repository of resources that is easily edited and searched.

step 3 - well, i'll come back for more steps soon:)

Chances for an option to download messages...

What are the chances of adding some kind of feature where we could off load our messages. I mean, I for one, have, I am embarassed to say, but in the thousands of messages.

I do not want to delete them, and at the same time I don't have the time to go through them all and see what I want to keep. I'd rather just save them all at once and forget them.

did you know tribe is soon launching 'open profiles' which will let you have
- yourname.tribe.net as a url and
- the abillity to customize your tribe profile
- ability to bring in your blogs or start blogs
- bring in stuff from other places on the web like amzn wish lists

it will work like this...

1. register your blog with the most relevant tribe.
2. add tribecaster to your blog.
3. when you post on your blog it will automatically create a new topic thread in that blog.
4. when people post to that tribe or other connected blogs, it will show up in a box on your blog.
